UL-Lafayette coach Mark Hudspeth called Monday “a big day” for his Ragin’ Cajun
football program.
But
it wasn’t exactly because it happened to be Media Day at the school’s Alumni
Center.
Rather,
it was because for the first time since their spring game they were able to hit
and practice wearing all pads.
“It
was to see those pads smacking again, and just to get around that energy level
and the feel of the game,” senior quarterback Blaine Gautier said during the
fifth day of preseason training camp. “It was good.”

Gautier is one of the leading stars on the Ragin’ Cajuns football team going
into this fall.
“I
like the makeup of our team,” Hudspeth said. “We have a lot deeper team.”
Hudspeth
said winning the Sun Belt Conference remains a high priority for the Cajuns,
who didn’t do that in his first year as head coach in 2011 – but did go 9-4
with a New Orleans Bowl win over San Diego State.
Coach
Hudsepth also mention in order for his team to win games, they have to take
care of the football.
Approx.
35 media outlets attending the Media Day on Monday, attending the Media Day was
new Sun Belt Conference Commissioner Karl Benson.
Note: UL coach Mark
Hudspeth is looking high and wide for backup help behind St. Thomas More High
product Andre Huval, his Rimington Trophy Watch List center.
Candidates
include Terry Johnson, a sophomore from Oxford, Miss., who started at right
guard in his only season at Northwest Mississippi Junior College before
transferring to UL; Daniel Lemelle, a junior from Beaumont, Texas, who played
sparingly on the offensive line for the Cajuns last season; and Joseph Brunson,
a true freshman from Ruston High.
Head
coach Hudspeth is also impressed so far with his three true-freshmen
quarterbacks, Brooks Haack of Katy, Texas, Tuerlings High product D'Shaie
Landor and Carencro High product Jalen Nixon.
